Miscellaneous Information |

What others are saying: |
- ACORN
grew out of the Arkansas Community Organizations for Reform Now founded in
Little Rock in 1970. It is led by founder Wade Rathke, who also heads SEIU
Local 100 in New Orleans and is a board member of the Tides Foundation.
- The ACORN
Institute is the education and training arm for the many separate community
and housing groups allied under the ACORN banner. ACORN Housing Corp. has
offices in 34 cities and 2006 revenue of $6.9 million.
- An
offshoot of a 1960s group, the National Welfare Rights Organization, ACORN
overall has grown to more than 350,000 member families, organized in 850
neighborhood chapters in over 100 U.S. cities and overseas.
- The
group claims its voter drives registered 540,000 new voters in 2006, but nationwide
charges of fraud led to the indictment and conviction of ACORN canvassers
in Missouri.
- Has pressed
for hundreds of millions of dollars more for allocation to an “Affordable
Housing Trust Fund” via the Federal Housing Administration, which could be
used as a political slush fund to bolster its lobbying and political
activities.
- ACORN
pressures banks to make community and housing loans while providing
low-income housing counseling. It lobbied for the Community Reinvestment
Act.
- It stages “living wage” protests for municipal laws to
force private employers to provide pay and benefits greater than the federal
minimum wage.
