CRC Staff Biographies
Terrence Scanlon, President Terrence Scanlon was named Capital Research Center (CRC) president and chairman of its board of trustees in 1994. Earlier, he was Vice President for corporate relations at The Heritage Foundation. His public career includes an appointment by President Ronald Reagan to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission where he served seven years, including service as chairman during President Reagan's second term. He holds a B.S. in economics from Villanova University in Pennsylvania. He is married and the father of three adult sons, serves on several non-profit boards and is a frequent contributor for various newspapers, cable news networks and radio stations.
Robert Huberty, Executive Vice President and Director of Research Robert Huberty is Vice President and Director of Research at Capital Research Center. Before joining CRC in 1993, he served in several positions at The Heritage Foundation, which he joined in 1980 as editor of Mandate for Leadership, the well-known volume of public policy advice that was widely used by the Reagan Administration. Subsequently, he was Director of the Resource Bank (1983-91), where he acted as the Heritage liaison to conservative public policy organizations, and Director of Academic Programs (1991-93). Earlier, Robert was a research assistant to former President Richard Nixon, assisting on President Nixon's Memoirs (1978). He is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine, from which he received B.A. and M.A. degrees in American history.
Phil Brand, Director, EducationWatch Phil Brand joined CRC in June 2007 to direct EducationWatch, our program monitoring advocacy groups engaged in the debate over school choice and education reform. He is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire with degrees in economics and political science.
Brent Jordan, Office Manager Brent Jordan joined CRC in April 2009. He received his B.S. in History from Kentucky Christian University in 2005 and an M.A in Government from Regent University in 2007. Between then and now, he worked for the Kentucky state government. He oversees operations and fulfills publication orders.
Christopher Krukewitt, Accountant Christopher Krukewitt oversees CRC accounts and office operations. A certified public accountant, he received a B.S. degree in business from Wake Forest University and an A.A.S. in accounting from Northern Virginia College.
Matthew Vadum, Senior Editor Veteran journalist Matthew Vadum edits Organization Trends and Foundation Watch. While in the Washington bureau of The Bond Buyer, he covered Congress, the Supreme Court, housing, and state and local finance. While a reporter for the Central Penn Business Journal in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, he won an award for outstanding legal journalism from the Pennsylvania Bar Association for an article that focused on employment law. He holds an M.A. in American Studies from Georgetown University.
An expert on the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), Vadum has written hundreds of articles and blog posts on the group. His groundbreaking research on ACORN was cited by Michelle Malkin in her New York Times bestseller, "Culture of Corruption." Malkin credits Vadum with being one of two people in the nation for "foresight and insight in reporting on the [ACORN] story when no one else would." Vadum's work is also cited in David Freddoso's New York Times bestseller, "The Case Against Barack Obama."
Gordon Cummings, Director, Development Gordon Cummings previously was Development Coordinator at the Cato Institute and subsequently worked at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute where he was on the staff of the Europe/Eurasia Advanced Area Studies program. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in English.
J. Marie Erwin, Development Associate A native of Gilbert, Arizona, Erwin previously worked as an intern for the Capital Research Center, which published a paper she wrote in Organization Trends. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Marriage, Family and Human Development and from University of Arizona with a Masters in Public Administration. She works to increase donor support for CRC’s work.
Matt Patterson, Senior Editor Matt Patterson edits Labor Watch and Green Watch. His work has appeared in some of the nation's top newspapers and political sites, including the Washington Post, New York Post, Washington Examiner, American Thinker, and FOXNews.com. From 2009 to 2010, he was a Washington Fellow at the National Review Institute. Previously he served as research assistant to Charles Krauthammer and political coordinator for the Rudy Giuliani presidential campaign.
