Sandra Bernhard is Ugly

As Maxim magazine noted in a feature, “The Worst Comedians of All Time,” Sandra Bernhard is “not attractive.” Perhaps Maxim is given to understatement.

Bernhard is not funny now, has never been funny, and probably never will be funny.

Years ago I was dragged to her live show, “Without You I’m Nothing.” Under continued duress, I suffered through the movie too. Both were tedious beyond belief, filled with self-indulgent drivel from someone who imagines she’s cool. I don’t care that she swore: funny is funny, with or without profanities.

But Sandra Bernhard is not funny and her subject matter leaves much to be desired.

And yet her ugly, tasteless show has been revived at Theater J here in DC. (Video excerpt here. Warning: it’s vulgar.)

Starved for attention, the liberal Bernhard told the Theater J audience that if GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who is expected to campaign in New York, comes to Manhattan, she will be “gang-raped by my big black brothers.” And if that wasn’t bad enough, Bernhard threatened to “tear her apart like a Wise natural kosher chicken.”

This kind of humor, were it to be directed at the Democratic ticket, Barack Obama and Joe Biden, or anyone else for that matter, wouldn’t be funny either.

Just plain ugly.
